A Spanish company, Equilicuá, has introduced a raincoat made entirely of bioplastic derived from potato starch and other natural resources. The Spudraincoat is 100% biodegradable and compostable, which means at the end of its life cycle it converts into organic matter and is returned to the biosphere. In Europe, where the product is currently being sold exclusively, the raincoat is also impregnated with a small clay ball full of seeds, allowing the wearer to plant the raincoat when its useful purpose is exhausted.
“The excess of plastic everywhere made our team think about what could be done,” says Maite Cantón, a partner in the business. “We decided to create a product to provoke thought about the tons of waste that disposable PVC generates around the world.”
The products are made in Spain with European raw materials and sell for between €8 and €12, depending on design. Export regulations prevent the sale of the product with seeds outside of the European Union, but Cantón says they are looking at ways to export the coat without seeds in the near future.
Finally, it IS easy being green.
